Following US President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will not run for re-election, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke out on social media this Sunday (21). Harris stated that her goal is to unite the Democratic Party and the country to defeat the Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump.
“I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party — and unite our nation — to defeat Donald Trump and his extreme Project 2025 agenda,” Harris said, also soliciting donations for her campaign. Project 2025, which Harris mentioned, is a set of right-wing conservative proposals for reshaping government developed by the ultraconservative Heritage Foundation.

By dropping out of the presidential race, Biden expressed his support for Kamala Harris’ candidacy. However, to officially run for president for the Democrats, Harris still needs to get the party’s approval.
On the X network, Harris thanked Biden for his leadership and expressed her honor at the president’s endorsement. “On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and his decades of service to our country. I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and I intend to earn and earn this nomination,” she said.
Biden’s withdrawal
On Sunday afternoon, in a post on the social network X, Biden stated that, despite his initial intention to seek reelection, he believes it is in the best interest of the Democratic Party and the country to withdraw his candidacy. He emphasized that he will focus on his work as president until the end of his term in January 2025.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interests of my party and country that I step aside and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted on social media.
Biden’s announcement came after mounting public and private pressure from Democratic lawmakers and party insiders, who urged him to drop out of the race after a poor performance in a televised debate against his Republican rival last month.
