The Italian Office today published (30) a statement stating that it will issue 500,000 work visas to people outside the European Union by 2028. The plan is considered a response to the constant shortage of labor in the country.
The Italian population is decreasing each year, and the country’s age pyramid reveals a gradual aging of its people. In 2024 alone, there were 280,000 more deaths than births, and the government had approved 450,000 immigrants between 2023 and 2025.
A projection by the Conti Publici Observatory of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart estimates that Italy should receive at least 10 million immigrants by 2050 to combat population reduction.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, yet, does not seem to be reducing the combative speech to immigrants who raised many of her voters. Italy signed during its government agreements with countries in North Africa, dramatically reducing immigration by the Mediterranean. She also sent some illegal immigrants from her country to Albania, but the decision is currently in a judicial imbroglio in the Supreme Court.
