The national representative elected by the Left Front, Myriam Bregman, participated in Ángel de Brito’s program on the Bondi channel, where she led the most urgent discussions of national politics after the result of the legislative elections last Sunday. “It is the first time that the left is the third force in the elections, at the same time in the City and Province of Buenos Aires, it is a striking and historic fact,” said the host during the interview with Myriam Bregman.

With his direct style, Bregman did not avoid any topic: he spoke of the neglect of the left during the campaign and in the balance of the elections, of the prejudices to the left that are installed “from above” but that receive a lot of recognition in the street, of the reasons for the great election of the left in Province and City of Buenos Aires. remaining as the third force, he analyzed the electoral results at the national level, the role of the opposition and the challenges that workers and popular sectors face in the face of the economic crisis.

Some of the most important definitions left by the interview:

  • “In this election we saw a lot of neglect on the left, and it is seen now in the balance of the elections. There are even “pluralist” communicators but they only talk about the first or second, they do not talk about who came third in the Province or City of Buenos Aires.”
  • “I feel that there is a lot of recognition in the street. Sometimes the elections show a photo of a moment, of a policy: that happened on September 7 and now the government may have the same problem. The measurement that one has is that of daily contact, the politicians of the traditional parties walk the street little, but I am there and live like anyone else: while shopping they tell me “my daughter voted for you.”

Asked about the prejudices that fall on the fact of being left-wing or “left-handed,” she responded that: “The prejudice left by a ferocious military dictatorship in our country, where whoever fought for another society became “subversive,” or “terrorist,” and that later continued to be fueled by years of neoliberalism. And sometimes the attacks come from people who are supposed to be progressive, or who call themselves national and popular, going so far as to invent something like “the troska photo,” saying that we go to the mobilizations to beat us. A colleague of mine lost the vision in one eye due to the repression in Plaza Congreso. Who could want that?

On the street it happens to me that some kids who voted for others ask me if they can take a photo with me because they admire me anyway. “This reflects that very different things happen below than the polarization that they promote from above, and I also see it with Nicolás del Caño when we toured the Province, in neighborhoods and universities in the suburbs.”

When asked why Milei won, Bregman pointed out that “Peronism did not have a sweeping election in September, but rather it was very even in number of votes with previous ones, and La Libertad Avanza had been and continues to be affected by the disability scandal, it lost a lot of votes from young people, but it won in other sectors. I think that now the discussion now took place in the economic field, Trump’s extortion worked, that in Argentina there have been outbreaks and the popular sectors have a very bad time, so to say “Hey, if you don’t vote for La Freedom Moves forward, everything explodes” is an enormous coercion. They voted for stability, very conservative, but it does not mean that it is a blank check for Milei to move forward now with whatever he wants, it would be a big mistake that already happened to Macri.”

  • “Milei was having different bailouts. The first is the whitewashing, which was voted for by all, even the senators who were the Fuerza Patria candidates, the IMF gave him a bailout twice, and now the last Donald Trump gave him because otherwise the elections were held under totally different conditions. And on the other side that there was? There is the memory of Alberto Fernández’s government, of 7% monthly inflation. Peronism itself, some leaders with great intensity that it was a “ballotage”, and they did the government a favor by removing the discussion from where it really was, a legislative election, it will come issue by issue, such as the right to abortion – watch out for the “celestes” that are hidden at the bottom of the lists -, that was not put up for discussion. And what people did was not go to vote, you had a very high abstention for a legislative election.
