At least 550 Palestinians have been killed and 4,066 people have been injured while looking for food and humanitarian aid in the “distribution points” managed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), backed by the United States and Israel, since it began operating four weeks ago, according to the Gaza Government Media Office.
The help centers of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (FGH) began operating in the strip at the end of May. The circumstances of its creation and financing are murky: it is known that it was created by Israel in coordination with American evangelicals and private security companies. Its current executive director is an evangelical leader close to US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Distribution centers usually open only one hour every morning. According to officers and soldiers who served in their areas, the Israeli Defense forces (FDI) shoot the people who arrive before the opening hours to prevent them from approaching, or again after the closure of the centers to disperse them.
“It’s a battlefield,” said a soldier. “Where I was destined, between one and five people they died every day. They are treated as a hostile force: without crowd control measures, without tear gas; only real fire with everything imaginable: heavy machine guns, launched, mortars.
The soldier added: «We open early fire in the morning if someone tries to put in line hundreds of meters away, and sometimes we simply load against them at a short distance. But there is no danger to the forces ». According to him, «I have no knowledge of any case of fire response. There is no enemy or weapons ». He also said that the activity in his service zone is known as the Salado Fish Operation, the name of the Israeli version of the children’s game “Red Light, Green Light” that became popularly known in the series “The Squid Games”
FDI officers reported that the army does not allow the public, in Israel or abroad, see images of what happens in the surroundings of the food distribution centers. According to them, the army is convinced that FGH operations have avoided the total collapse of international legitimacy to continue the war. They believe that IDF have managed to make Gaza a “backyard”, especially since the beginning of the war with Iran.
An officer who served in the security team of a distribution center described the FDI approach as deeply defective: “Working with the civilian population when the only way to interact is to open fire is, at least, very problematic,” he said. «It is not ethical or morally acceptable that people have to arrive, or do not get it, to a [zona humanitaria] under tank fire, snipers and mortars ».
“At night, we open fire to indicate to the population that this is a combat zone and that they should not approach,” said the officer. “On one occasion,” he said, “the mortars stopped shooting and we saw that people began to approach. So we resumed the fire to make it clear that they could not do it. In the end, one of the projectiles hit a group of people.”
