Palestinian authorities report more than 100 deaths in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip in the biggest threat to the ceasefire since it came into force.
The Israeli military announced this Wednesday (29/10) that the ceasefire had been reestablished in the Gaza Strip after it carried out a series of airstrikes overnight across the Palestinian territory.
This wave of attacks that hit the Palestinian enclave from north to south from 7pm on Tuesday (local time, 1pm BrasĂlia) until 10am this Wednesday killed 104 people, including 46 children, and injured 253 more, according to local health authorities.
Israeli authorities stated that their forces attacked “30 terrorists who held command positions in terrorist organizations” operating within Palestinian territory.
The attacks – the deadliest since the ceasefire began on October 10 – represented the most serious threat to the fragile truce to date.
Israel says Hamas violated ceasefire
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he ordered the military to carry out “powerful strikes” against Gaza after accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire.
According to Netenyahu, Hamas returned to Israel remains that, after forensic examination, were identified as belonging to a hostage whose body had been recovered by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in November 2023.
Furthermore, Israel stated that members of the Palestinian group attacked its soldiers in Rafah and that the clash resulted in the death of an Israeli soldier. The Palestinian group denied any involvement in this attack.
Netanyahu called these cases a “clear violation” of the ceasefire agreement.
In response to the Israeli attacks, Hamas said it would delay the handover of a hostage’s body.
Trump appears confident
US President Donald Trump defended Israel’s attacks and said they were justified because of the incident in Rafah, the southernmost city in the Gaza Strip.
Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that Israel must retaliate when its troops are attacked, but said he was confident the ceasefire would withstand escalating violence because “Hamas is a very small part [do processo de] peace in the Middle East, and they have to behave.” Otherwise they will be “eliminated”, he added.
