O The Israeli Army (IDF) claimed this Friday (6) to have destroyed an underground military bunker located in Tehran that was believed to be associated with Iran’s last supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. According to a military statement cited by international agencies, around 50 Israeli air force fighter jets participated in the operation, which targeted the underground installation still used by high-ranking Iranian authorities.
According to the Israeli Army, the attack was the result of a prolonged process of intelligence collection and analysis aimed at identifying strategic installations linked to Iran’s political and military leadership. The Israel Defense Forces stated that the site functioned as sensitive military infrastructure and that its destruction would impact the coordination capacity of Iranian authorities.
The bunker would be in the Iranian capital, Tehran, and would have been used in the past by Khamenei, who died after the start of the current war involving the country. Even after the death of the religious leader, the underground complex would continue to be used by members of the Iranian government and security forces, according to information released by the Israeli military.
The episode occurs during the war that broke out at the end of February, when the United States and Israel began carrying out attacks against Iranian targets related to the country’s nuclear program and military structure. Since then, the conflict has provoked exchanges of threats and armed actions in different parts of the Middle East.
After the start of the offensive, Iranian state media announced that Khamenei had been one of the victims of bombings conducted by US and Israeli forces. The announcement intensified regional tension and led Iranian authorities to promise retaliation against those responsible for the attacks.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that responding to military actions by Israel and the United States is considered by Tehran to be a “legitimate right and duty.” The Iranian government also declared that it could launch the “heaviest offensive” in its history in response to military operations.
Since the start of the confrontation, Iran has directed threats to Middle Eastern countries that host US military bases, including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.
In response to threats of retaliation, United States President Donald Trump warned that further Iranian attacks could provoke an even more intense military reaction from Washington. According to him, if Iran proceeds with reprisals, the United States will respond with force “never seen before”.
