Dozens of Palestinians were killed and more than 300 houses were demolished in the Zeytoun neighborhood in just three days

The Israeli Army approved the occupation of the city of Gaza on Wednesday, estimating that between 80,000 and 100,000 reservists will need to be mobilized for the initial plan.

The decision of Eyal Zamir’s Chief of Staff occurs after several discussions – initiated by the government of Benjamin Netanyahu – about the imminent occupation of the besieged enclave.

“The Chief of Staff emphasized the importance of increasing the readiness of strength, preparing the mobilization of the reserve and allowing a period of recovery before the next missions,” says an army statement.

Zamir had already expressed strong opposition to the occupation and even threatened to resign, while tensions continue between him and the defense minister Israel Katz, among other plan proponents.

Reports that Israel’s security office approved the occupation of the Gaza Strip appeared last Friday.

The operation is scheduled to start with the conquest of the city of Gaza, with the objective of ethnic cleaning of approximately one million Palestinian residents.

An Israeli authority told Axios that the plan aims to empty the city of Gaza de Civil in two months.

A siege would then be imposed on the city, aiming at Hamas members, followed by an earthly operation.

Although the official declaration referred to the action as a “power taking”, Israeli’s means of communication said that the term “occupy” was deliberately avoided to circumvent legal obligations associated with formal occupation according to international law.

A high Israeli employee told local media that the choice of the word was only for official purposes, confirming that the real intention is to occupy the Gaza Strip.

Demolitions, murders and displacements

Despite the overall reaction of human rights groups, activists and even governments, Israeli authorities have progressed to what many fear being a plan to attach the blocked track.

The current attack on the ZeiToun neighborhood, located in the old town of Gaza, killed dozens of Palestinians and demolished more than 300 houses in just three days.

Local media reports described bombing and “systematic” demolitions by Israeli forces.

According to Mahmoud Bassal, Civil Defense spokesman in Gaza, the attacks focused on a multi-storey building with five or more floors.

The strength of the explosions caused the surrounding structures to collapse.

“Demolitions were carried out without notice, and intense bombing prevented the rescue teams from reaching the injured,” he said, further emphasizing fears that many civilians can remain arrested under the rubble.

Bassal added that the city is “being blatantly decimated before the eyes and ears of the world,” as he asked for the end of the genocide of almost 700 days.

Since the genocide of Israel began on October 7, 2023, Israeli troops have launched several terrestrial attacks in the city of Gaza and throughout the Gaza Strip.

The death toll between Palestinians rose to at least 61,776, leaving more than 154,906 injured, according to recent data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.
