The Iranian government has again denying that it is developing nuclear weapons in response to recent accusations made by the United States, Israel and international press vehicles.
In an interview given on Saturday, 28, to RT, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, said there is no indication of enrichment aimed at armament production in the country.
Baghaei classified as unfounded the allegations that Iran represents a nuclear threat to the Middle East region. The spokesman argued that the Iranian nuclear program has been monitored by international bodies and that there are no records that support the existence of deviation for military purposes.
“I think Iran has made it clear in the last two or three decades that do not seek nuclear weapons,” he said. “There has never been weapons enrichment in Iran. Please analyze reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (AIEA) and show me a single clue or evidence that the Iranian nuclear program is deviating of peaceful purposes.”
Recent reports released by the AIEA were mentioned by Baghaei as elements that corroborate the Iranian position. According to him, the agency’s director general, Rafael Grossi, has publicly stated that no evidence of Iran’s systematic efforts were identified to develop nuclear weaponry. Nevertheless, the spokesman criticized AIEA’s omission regarding recent attacks on nuclear facilities in the country.
Last week, new offensives reached centers linked to the Iranian nuclear program. Tehran attributes the bombings to Israel operations, with possible support from the United States. Iranian authorities claim that actions violate the non -proliferation of nuclear weapons (TNP), of which the country is a signatory, and request firm response from international entities involved in overseeing global nuclear activity.
Baghaei stated that Iran’s expectation is that the AIEA and its council of governors will clearly comment on the actions against nuclear facilities.
“What is expected of the IAEA and its council of governors is that they remain loyal to their responsibilities and mandates, unequivocally condemning the attacks of the American and Israeli regimes to our nuclear facilities,” he said.
The diplomat also argued that the absence of response from the international agency weakens its authority and contributes to the increase of tensions in the region. According to him, the silence in the face of bombing represents a deviation from the institutional obligations of the AIEA and compromises the role of the agency in mediation of nuclear disputes.
Iran maintains the position that its nuclear program has peaceful purposes, focused on energy generation and scientific research. This right is recognized by TNP, a multilateral treaty that regulates the access and use of nuclear technology between signatory countries.
The Iranian government considers that there is a distorted interpretation of the treaty by some countries. According to Baghaei, the United States would be adopting criteria that limit the use of nuclear energy by developing countries.
“The US is offering a very dangerous interpretation of TNP – that developing states are not entitled to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. This is not acceptable to any responsible and decent TNP member,” he said.
In response to what an environment of international hostility considers, the Iranian parliament approved a bill that provides for the suspension of cooperation with the IAEA. The measure reflects internal discontent with what is interpreted as an instrumentalization of international organisms by western powers.
The decision still needs to be formally implemented by the government, but already generates concern among international observers regarding the future of transparency in Iranian nuclear activities. If the cooperation is suspended, the AIE may face restrictions to continue its inspections and verify the fulfillment of Iran’s obligations.
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the decision of Parliament is a direct consequence of the lack of international conviction to attacks against its facilities. The country maintains that it is willing to continue fulfilling its obligations under the TNP, provided it receives treatment compatible with the principles of the treaty and that its rights are respected.
Tensions involving the Iranian nuclear program have increased in recent years, especially after the US’s US nuclear agreement departure during the Trump government. Since then, the level of uranium enrichment by Iran has risen, although Tehran insists that its activities remain within technical parameters compatible with civil uses.
So far, the AIEA has not officially commented on the attacks mentioned by Tehran or the possible suspension of cooperation. It is expected that the issue will be discussed in the upcoming meetings of the agency’s governors, scheduled for the coming weeks.
