Survey conducted by the Institute for Social, Political and Economic Research (IPESPE) between May 14 and 19 indicates that 54% of the Brazilian population disapproves of the management of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), while 40% express approval. The data were released on Wednesday (21) and reported by CNN Brazil.

The survey listened to 2,500 people in all regions of the country. The study has a margin of error of two percentage points, for more or less, and a confidence level of 95.45%.

The scenario registered in May has stability compared to the previous survey conducted by the Institute in March, when the disapproval rates were also 54%. At the time, the percentage of approval was 41%, a percentage point above the current number.

In addition to measuring the rates of approval and disapproval of the Federal Government, IPESPE questioned respondents about their perspectives regarding the future of administration.

Among those consulted, 44% responded that they expect a worsening of government conduct, while 39% believe there will be improvement. Another 16% said the situation should remain the same.

The results point to a division in the expectations of the population, with the predominance of pessimism regarding the future performance of the current management. Research does not detail the specific reasons given by interviewees to feelings of approval, disapproval or future expectation.

According to IPESPE, the sample is representative of the Brazilian electorate and was collected through computer assisted telephone interviews (CATI). The institute reports that the data were weighted according to variables such as gender, age, region, education and income, in order to reflect the national demographic profile.

The Lula Administration evaluation takes place in the second year of the current presidential term, which began in January 2023. This is the third passage of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva by the Presidency of the Republic, after two consecutive terms between 2003 and 2010.

Although research has not detailed cutouts by region, age group or socioeconomic profile, global numbers indicate a critical perception of most interviewees regarding the driving of the government.

Disclosure occurs in a moment of debate on the country’s political-economic scenario, marked by topics such as gross domestic product growth, inflation, interest, social programs and articulations in the National Congress. The survey did not individually evaluate these factors nor directly related to them the approval or disapproval rates.

With the margin of error considered, government approval could range from 38% to 42%, while disapproval could range from 52% to 56%.

The survey also indicates that a portion of the population, corresponding to 6% of respondents, did not know or preferred not to answer the question about the approval of the federal government.

The methodology and research results follow the technical standard of public opinion statistical measurement. IPESPE is an institute recognized for conducting periodic polls with wide geographical and methodological coverage.

This research round is part of a series of opinion studies conducted throughout the current presidential term. The results are often accompanied by political, economic and academic institutions as indicators of the environmental environment and social perception.

The next round of research with the same parameters has not yet been released.
