Mukesh Chandrakar, an investigative journalist, was found dead in a septic tank; examination revealed brutal injuries, broken neck and ripped out heart, shocking India

The body of an Indian investigative journalist was found in a septic tank. Mukesh Chandrakar, 32, was a freelance journalist in the state of Chhattisgarh who reported on alleged corruption in the construction industry on his YouTube channel, Bastar Junction.

Police found his body in a septic tank in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district on January 3.

He had been missing since New Year’s Day.

Four people were arrested, including three of Chandrakar’s relatives, according to local media reports.

The journalist’s death would be linked to a recent investigation into a road construction project in the Bastar region, which led to an investigation by the government.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Chandrakar suffered blunt force injuries to his head and ribs, had his neck broken and his heart was ripped out, as reported by India Today.

The Press Council of India has requested a report on the “facts of the case”.

Vishnu Deo Sai, chief minister of Chhattisgarh, called Chandrakar’s death “devastating” and promised the “severest punishment” for those responsible.

India ranks 159th out of 180 countries in the 2024 World Press Freedom Index.

According to Reporters Without Borders, on average, three to four Indian journalists are murdered annually in connection with their work.
