Days after being announced as a full member of BRICS, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said this Friday that joining the group will bring positive impacts for Indonesia, the region and the world.
Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday Indonesia’s official entry as a full member of BRICS, marking the group’s first expansion since Brazil assumed the rotating presidency for 2025.
“This decision is not the result of short-term work, but rather the fruit of Indonesia’s diplomatic efforts, consistency and determination,” Sugiono said in his annual press statement, adding that the decision is in line with the country’s historic foreign policy. free and active engagement in the global order.
The Foreign Minister stated that, as a member of BRICS, Indonesia seeks to be a bridge between the interests of developing countries, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, and contribute to alleviating geoeconomic and geopolitical tensions.
Initially established in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2010, BRICS now has a total of 10 full members.
