UN Secretary-General António Guterres, greeted the initiative and defended the union of efforts to combat world food insecurity
The global alliance against hunger and poverty was cited as an example of leadership in the fight against food insecurity, on Monday, July 28, during the opening of the 2nd UN Summit over food systems (UNFS+4), which occurs in Adi Ababa, Ethiopia, until this Tuesday (29/7).
In a video sent, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres admitted progress in the fight against hunger, but still insufficient to face the current situation. “Global hunger is growing, commercial shocks are making food prices inaccessible and a third of the world cannot pay for a healthy diet,” he lamented. “It’s not just a scarcity crisis – it’s a crisis of equity, justice and climate,” he added.
Given this scenario, he defended the union of efforts and greeted initiatives such as the global alliance against hunger and poverty. “We need to build based on new leaders, such as the global alliance against hunger and poverty, and expand actions in all sectors,” he said. “Governments can’t do this alone,” he added.
For Guterres, there are three emergencies to be faced. The first concerns the need to “break silos”. “Food systems are everyone’s responsibility, we need integrated policies and a global landmark that connects agriculture to people, health, climate, trade and finance,” he said. In addition, it emphasized the need to address power imbalances, as well as unlocking and connecting a large scale.
The National Secretary of Food and Nutrition Security of the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Hunger Fighting (MDS), Lilian Rahal, also participated in the opening. “The recognition of the UN Secretary-General to the global alliance against hunger and poverty as a model of innovation for world food security reinforces the path we are building,” he said. “As he pointed out, this is not just a struggle for food production, but a battle for justice and equality. The future of food is the future of humanity – and we cannot accept that hunger is still used as a weapon of war. Our connection with climate schedule, especially in COP30, and investments in agroecology show that it is possible to unite food sovereignty, sustainability and dignity for all,” he said.
