Application that helps consumers identify the origin of items in supermarkets has become the most downloaded on smartphones in the country after Trump’s threats to Greenland.

Outrage in Denmark over US President Donald Trump’s threats to take over Greenland has reached supermarket shelves, with some consumers choosing to boycott American products.

The boycott has been promoted with the help of new apps that allow consumers to scan food items using their smartphone to verify their origin.

One of these applications, UdenUSA (“Without USA”), was developed by 21-year-old Danish Jonas Pipper and his friend Malthe Hensberg. The idea emerged last year, when US President Donald Trump seriously threatened for the first time to take control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory belonging to Denmark.

The tensions sparked a wave of protests in Denmark and resulted in the creation of a Facebook group dedicated to boycotting American products. The group currently has more than 100,000 members in a country of around 6 million inhabitants.

Pipper said many consumers were eager to stop buying U.S. food, but often found it difficult to identify the origin of products in supermarkets. The application aims to solve this problem, signaling the country of origin and suggesting alternatives from European producers. This Wednesday (21/01), UdenUSA ranked first among free applications in the Danish App Store.

Economic impact still uncertain

Similar initiatives emerged last year, becoming for many Danes a way to voice their opposition to US trade policies. Some supermarket chains have marked products of European origin with a star on the price tag to facilitate identification.

However, the overall impact of the boycott remains uncertain. Denmark’s economy is relatively small and only a limited number of food products are imported directly from the USA.

Even if a significant number of consumers avoid American products, it is unlikely to result in significant economic or political consequences, said Sascha Raithel, a marketing professor at the Free University of Berlin.
