The 16 ministers appointed by the new president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, have taken office during an event and thus formally form the new Government, just four days after the investiture session.
Illa has assured that the common denominator of the new ministers is their vocation for public service. With them, he says, he will carry out the “third great transformation of Catalonia” and he has insisted that this will be carried out from the “shared public space” that is Spain and Europe.
The president wanted to highlight the two main new developments of his government: the first is the creation of the Department of linguistic policies, as a result of the investiture agreement with ERC. “Defending the language is not an attack against anyone, but rather a defence of something that conveys Catalan identity.”
Illa also put forward the creation of the Department of Sports, following the demands of the sector. Illa, in a brief speech at a brief event, ended by thanking ERC for the investiture agreement, as well as the outgoing president and councillors. “We will honour the commitments made,” he assured.
Illa has chosen to surround himself with his core group in the new Government, the same one that has accompanied him during his opposition legislature in the Parliament and also some of his top collaborators in the PSC, who take on several of the most important portfolios, such as Economy, Education or Interior.
In addition, the president has completed the team with signings across the ideological spectrum, which is trying to open up beyond the PSC and ranges from former ministers of CiU and Junts to senior officials of the last ERC government, such as Francesc Xavier Vila, in charge of the Department of Linguistic Policies and who was already general secretary of this portfolio with the Government of Aragonès. Also noteworthy is the incorporation of Miquel Sàmper, in charge of Business and Employment, who was Minister of the Interior with Torra.
