Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies, which faced tough U.S. sanctions in 2020 and was cut off from crucial chip supplies, surprised Washington last year by launching a smartphone using an advanced semiconductor. Now the company is preparing to hit another milestone.
Huawei will hold its fall launch event next Monday and Tuesday in Shenzhen, led by HiSilicon, its secretive chip design unit. The announcement has sparked widespread speculation, especially in the United States, where industry analysts believe the company may unveil a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor that could rival the advanced chips that U.S. companies such as Nvidia are banned from selling to China.
This potential development could shake the market dominance that Nvidia and other American manufacturers have in China and emerging markets, and even make Washington reconsider its sanctions strategy to curb China’s technological advances.
On Friday, the U.S. government took another step toward restricting competitors such as China from accessing cutting-edge technologies, announcing new export controls on quantum computing tools and advanced chip manufacturing. Countries taking similar steps, such as the Netherlands, have also expanded their export restrictions on chip technology.
While Huawei faces major challenges, including performance issues and difficulties in mass-producing chips due to sanctions, experts say the company is under intense pressure to launch new products that will keep it competitive with rivals in the US and South Korea. Some believe Huawei could introduce new chips, such as the Kirin 9000s for smartphones and the A910-C for AI, that could directly compete with Nvidia’s H100 chips.
Huawei, in addition to targeting the Chinese market, has big international ambitions, including a partnership with basketball star Tony Parker to expand its presence in Europe ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics. With the launch approaching, the world’s eyes are on Huawei as it continues to defy US restrictions.
