The smartphone promises to heat up the market, with 5G technology and its own chip, the new launch intensifies competition in the premium segment and challenges Apple
Huawei Technologies is set to launch its new Mate 70 smartphone next month, intensifying its rivalry with Apple and other Chinese manufacturers, according to local media reports and a supply chain source familiar with the matter.
If confirmed, the launch will be further proof of the Shenzhen giant’s return to the premium handset market, following US sanctions that briefly halted its growth.
Huawei’s smartphone sales in China surpassed Apple’s in August for the first time in 46 months, according to a report from research firm CINNO.
Huawei is preparing for a surge in sales of its new premium Mate line, with component purchases for the Mate 70 being 50% higher than for the previous model, the Mate 60, the supply chain source said. Huawei has already prepared more than a million units of the Mate 70 for launch, despite supply chain bottlenecks due to US sanctions.
The launch was initially announced by China Star Market.
Huawei did not respond to a request for comment.
“The Mate 70 will be Huawei’s third 5G smartphone with a domestically manufactured chip, strengthening its position in the premium smartphone segment in China,” said Linda Sui, senior director at TechInsights.
“Huawei’s HarmonyOS, free from Android, enables greater integration between hardware and software, offering a competitive advantage over local competitors.”
