Mauro Vieira was invited by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to begin negotiations after a meeting between Trump and Lula. Brazilian president says negotiations are “at another time”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, was invited by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to a face-to-face meeting in Washington, where conversations are expected to begin on the tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump government on Brazilian products. The date has not yet been set.

According to a statement from Itamaraty, the two spoke by phone this Thursday (09/10). “After very positive dialogue on the bilateral agenda, they agreed that teams from both governments will hold a meeting soon in Washington, on a date to be defined, to continue the treatment of economic and commercial issues between the two countries”, says the note.

The meeting was organized after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met via videoconference with his American counterpart Donald Trump, paving the way for negotiations on the trade dispute between the two countries.

At the time, Lula asked Trump to revoke the extra tariffs on Brazil, which reach 50% on some products, and also the sanctions against Brazilian authorities.

The meeting was described as positive by both parties and Rubio, who heads US diplomacy, was appointed by the White House to continue the negotiations.

The two presidents exchanged phone numbers to establish a direct line of communication and are also expected to meet in person in the future.

Lula praises conversation with Trump

In an interview with Piatã radio, in Bahia, this Thursday, Lula said that “now begins another moment” in the negotiations. “We are two 80-year-old gentlemen, we preside over the two largest democracies in the West and we need to convey cordiality and harmony to the rest of the world, not discord and fights,” he said, praising Trump’s cordiality in the conversation.

“Maybe we’ll start having conversations from now on and let’s see if we can get it right, because Brazil doesn’t want a fight with the United States.”

This week, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said that Brazil will offer the best economic arguments for the United States to reverse the tariff. The main one, according to the minister, is that the measure is making life more expensive for the American people.

Haddad also indicated that US investments in Brazil could enter the negotiation, such as those focused on ecological transformation, rare earths, critical minerals and clean energy.

American trade war

The tariff imposed on Brazil is part of the White House’s new policy of increasing tariffs against trading partners. On April 2, Trump imposed customs barriers on countries according to the size of the deficit that the United States has with each nation. As the USA has a surplus with Brazil, at the time, the lowest rate of 10% was imposed.

However, on August 6, an additional 40% tariff against Brazil came into force in retaliation for decisions that, according to Trump, would harm American big tech and in response to the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro, convicted of leading an attempted coup d’état after losing the 2022 elections.

Among the products surtaxed by the United States are coffee, fruit and meat. Initially, around 700 items (45% of Brazil’s exports to the USA) such as orange juice and pulp, fuels, ores, fertilizers and civil aircraft, including their engines, parts and components were exempt.
