UN head, António Guterres, celebrated on Thursday the positive announcements of the White House, Kremlin and Kiev to prevent devastating attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine and Russia, linked to the large-scale invasion of Russia to his neighbor.
“Any ceasefire is welcome because it saves lives, but it is essential that a ceasefire opens the way to just peace in Ukraine,” said UN Secretary-General in Brussels, where he also addressed the huge Israeli climbing in Gaza and asked the world not to give up climate change.
A “fair peace” in Ukraine “is a peace that respects the UN letter, international law and the security council resolutions, namely about the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” said the UN head after meeting with the 27 European Union state leaders during a work lunch in a European conference in witch.
His comments followed a previous statement in which he welcomed new statements by President Trump and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine seeking to extend the ceasefire to the Black Sea-a crucial commercial route for food exports and fertilizers to the rest of the world.
“Arriving on a safe and free navigation agreement in the Black Sea, with security commitments and in accordance with the UN letter and international law would be a crucial contribution to global food security and supply chains,” the secretary general said in a statement issued by his spokesman’s office.
“This would reflect the importance of Ukraine and the Russian Federation commercial routes for global markets.”

The UN has invested strongly to ensure that Black Sea Ukrainian grain exports can occur safely, along with the transportation of Russian food and fertilizers, to stop the firing of food prices worldwide and avoid hunger in vulnerable countries.
The UN -mediated Black Sea initiative was agreed by Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and UN in Istanbul in July 2022. It allowed more than 30 million tons of grains and other foods to leave Ukraine ports and played an “indispensable role” in global food security, Guterres said at the time.
A parallel agreement was also signed between the UN and Moscow about Russian grain and fertilizer exports, known as a memorandum of understanding.
In July 2023, the UN Secretary-General expressed his deep regret for Russia’s decision to end his involvement in the grain initiative.
“The Secretary-General has consistently supported freedom of navigation in the Black Sea,” he continued his statement, adding that he remains “closely involved in the continuous implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Russian Federation on Global Food Security.”
CONDEMNATION OF THE KILLS IN GAZA
Speaking to journalists on the fringes of high -level discussions on the European Council, Mr. Guterres said he was “sad and shocked because the deaths and destruction are back in Gaza,” amidst confirmation of Israel’s defense forces that land operations had started in northern Enclave and “waves of attacks throughout the track.”
“The Palestinian people have suffered too much,” the UN chief insisted before renewing his appeal to the ceasefire to be respected, for unrestricted humanitarian access to all areas of Gaza and for the immediate and unconditional liberation of hostages.
“It is absolutely essential to keep the door open to the only way to bring peace to the Middle East, which is to have a Palestinian state side by side with an Israeli state,” he continued.
