Last Friday, a Microsoft-related computer systems failure resulted in flight cancellations in the United States, disruption to television broadcasts in the United Kingdom and telecommunications disruptions in Australia.

Microsoft announced, through the X platform, that it was in the process of “minimizing the impact in an accelerated manner”.

Global users of Microsoft services, including the banking and airline industries, experienced significant disruptions.

The company said it was implementing fixes for an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services. The extent and exact causes of the outage were not yet known, News Wires reported.

Additional reports indicated continued problems even after Microsoft said the situation was improving. Down Detector noted an increase in outages for companies including Visa, ADT Security and Amazon, and airlines including American Airlines and Delta.

In Australia, media outlets reported that airlines, telecommunications providers, banks and media broadcasters faced significant disruptions. Banks in New Zealand also suffered from outages.

Microsoft said it was redirecting affected traffic to alternative systems to speed resolution of the issue, noting a “positive trend in service availability.”

In Australia, outages hit banks including NAB, Commonwealth and Bendigo, as well as airlines Virgin Australia and Qantas, and providers including Telstra. Media outlets including ABC and Sky News experienced disruptions to their TV and radio broadcasts, with reports of sudden shutdowns on Windows computers.

An alert from Crowdstrike mentioned flaws in Windows hosts related to its Falcon Sensor platform, but the authenticity of the information could not be verified, and Crowdstrike did not provide additional comment on the incident.
