German Ministry of Foreign Warns citizens who are seen from the US entry to the USA does not guarantee access to the country. Alert occurs after three Germans were detained while joining the US amid the hardening of controls.

Germany has updated its travel recommendations to the United States to alert its citizens that an entry visa or exemption does not guarantee access to the country, after Washington reinforces controls as part of the hardening of migratory policy adopted from President Donald Trump’s government.

The recommendation was issued after three Germans were barred by the US Border authorities, a German Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday (19/03).

One of these cases involved a German citizen who lives in the country, who, according to family members, has been detained in Boston for over a week.

According to public broadcaster WGBH, based in Boston, the German, which has a residence permit – the so -called “Green Card” – was arrested this month by immigration authorities at Boston Airport upon returning to Luxembourg and was being kept in a detention center.

Two other cases received wide coverage in the German press.

One of them involves a 25 -year -old German, detained by crossing Mexico’s border with his American fiancee in February, according to the German magazine Der Spiegel. He spent two weeks arrested before being sent back to Germany. According to his bride, he was arrested after answering incorrectly to a question about where he lived, due to his weak mastery of English.

The other case involves a 29 -year -old woman who was also stopped at the US and Mexico border in January. Friends reported that she was traveling with tattoo equipment – which may have been played by immigration officials as a sign that she was planning to work in the US. According to reports, she spent three weeks detained, including nine days in solitary confinement – a refuted claim by the detention center.

According to the Ministry’s Internet Portal, have criminal records in the US, provide false information about the purpose of the trip or even a short length of the permanence beyond the official deadline can lead to arrest, detention and deportation upon entering or leaving the country.

Trump reinforces border control

The spokesman for the folder said Berlin takes these incidents seriously. The updated recommendation warns that obtaining a visa or document from the Electronic Travel Authorization System (this) does not guarantee the entry into the country. “The final decision is up to US border authorities,” the spokesman said, stating that he applies to German authorities.

Since taking office on January 20, Trump has signed a series of immigration -related executive orders that make border procedures more rigorous, such as verification of visas, and impose a strong repression of undocumented immigrants.

Germany’s Foreign Ministry said it was investigating whether recent arrests were isolated cases or part of a change in American politics.

Tourists from Germany and other European Union (EU) countries usually have access without visa to the US for a period of up to 90 days.
