In a statement, the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) condemned the recent Israeli airstrike in the Rafah region, south of Gaza, describing images of the devastation as “proof that Gaza is hell on earth“, as reported by the newspaper The globe.
Gaza Civil Defense reported that the bombing resulted in the deaths of more than 40 people, including women and children.
The Israeli Army confirmed the airstrike that took place on Sunday, claiming that the target was a Hamas compound. He also stated that two commanders of the group were killed.
However, this version is contested by Palestinian authorities and humanitarian aid organizations, who claim that the affected location was a previously demarcated humanitarian zone.
Mohammad al-Mughayyir of the Palestinian Civil Defense reported seeing “charred bodies and amputations” at the bombing site. The action was widely condemned by several nations.
The International Court of Justice had recently ordered Israel’s withdrawal from the area, adding to the controversy surrounding the attack.
Egypt called the bombing “deliberate” and called for the immediate implementation of the measures ordered by the ICJ.
O Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern about the impact of the attack on mediation efforts for a ceasefire. Tension in the region has increased, especially after Hamas launched rockets into Tel Aviv.
In Europe, the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, expressed indignation and demanded that Israel respect international law. Josep Borrell, head of European Union foreign policy, reinforced the need to respect the decisions of the International Court of Justice, in contrast to the actions of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
