The Garrahan fight won a 61% salary increase for the basic. The hospital management, with the controller Pirozzo at the head, responded with persecutory summaries to those of us who were at the head of the fight, delegates of the JI ATE, the Association of Professionals and activists of the general assembly. To fight for the effective implementation of the pediatric emergency, for the health of children and adolescents, against the reforms and adjustments of the IMF we are going for the coordination of all struggles and the general strike.
The Garrahan struggle won a 61% salary increase for basic workers, a victory that was not a result of the “management” that the Government and the hospital management want to sell, but rather the result of months of assemblies, strikes and mobilizations decided democratically from below. It was an achievement that had popular support, with families and the community as protagonists, and that shows that adjustment and emptying can be stopped when there is organization and unity. Garrahan’s claim is not only sectoral: it is part of the defense of the living conditions of children and adolescents and the rejection of the reforms promoted by the IMF and the Milei government.
With the summaries they seek to discipline, intimidate and isolate to advance with the emptying, the precariousness and the labor reform that the Government already applies in fact in Garrahan. More than 250 resignations and unreplaced retirements, precarious and monotributist contracts show the systematic attempt to dismantle the permanent staff and liquidate historical achievements: that nurses have the right to sick leave, that doctors can have a retirement, that administrative staff have a social work. It is no coincidence that Lugones has put Pirozzo—Bonaparte’s emptying auditor—in charge of the management.
The excuse for the summaries is the claim for discounts of up to $500,000 for days of unemployment, which mainly affected women heads of household, many of whom today cannot pay rent or basic expenses. They seek to hit the livelihood of families to discipline and give an exemplary message to every worker who tries to organize. Faced with this, the Garrahan experience once again shows that the fight is useful and that the solidarity of other sectors was essential to confront the government.
However, the Garrahan cannot save itself. This was seen throughout the year, sharing the streets with retirees, with university workers and students, with the Disability group and other sectors of workers fighting against the adjustment who showed solidarity or who suffered layoffs, cuts and emptying. That is the unity we need to stop labor reform, the adjustment and the hollowing out of the health system, coordinating all struggles and a national response. The CGT and the CTAs maintain a shameful truce while the attacks advance, which is why the national campaign in defense of Garrahan is urgent and essential. We must multiply the example of democratic organization, support those who are being persecuted and demand that the union centers call for a general strike and a unified plan of struggle.
If in Garrahan the summaries fall and we defeat Lugones’ plan to make workers precarious. If we win the move to a permanent plant, public health and all working people win.
From the Brown Classist Group and the Health and Care Post as part of the JI ATE Garrahan we believe that the force that confronts the imperialist plans in the world, such as the general strike in Italy, show the way to defeat the adjustment plans of Milei, the IMF and those who collaborate with it.
