Metaplanet, once a modest Japanese hotel developer, has completely reinvented itself with an ambitious Bitcoin strategy.
Inspired by the success of MicroSstratey – now known as a strategy – the company decided to invest in Bitcoin on a large scale. From hotel chain to Bitcoin giant
The transformation of Metaplanet started in 2024, when the Coronapandemie demanded its toll and the company was forced to take a new direction. Led by CEO Simon Gerovich, a former trader at Goldman Sachs, Metaplanet opted for a bold strategy: investing large -scale in Bitcoin.
Inspired by micro strategy’s Michael Saylor, Gerovich transformed the company into the Japanese counterpart of the American crypto giant. This turned out to be a golden move.
Metaplanet currently has 1,762 BTC, with an estimated value of around $ 171 million. But this is just the beginning. The company has ambitious plans to possess 10,000 BTC at the end of 2025 and even 21,000 BTC by 2026. To achieve these goals, Metaplanet wants to collect $ 750 million by issuing 21 million new shares. This is the largest Bitcoin-related capital increase in Asia so far.
The key to success
An important factor behind the popularity of Metaplanet is the Japanese Nippon Individual Savings Account program (NISA). This program enables private individuals to invest tax-free in shares, while direct Bitcoin purchases can be taxed with capital gains up to 55%. As a result, many investors see metaplanet as an attractive alternative: they are given exposure to Bitcoin without the high tax burden.

Metaplanet is not only limited to building a digital treasury. The company also has concrete plans in the physical world. For example, it wants to transform its last remaining hotel in Tokyo, the Royal Oak, into “The Bitcoin Hotel”. This location must become the meeting place for Bitcoin enthusiasts, investors and experts, with network events and conferences.
