Brazil and China seal a historic partnership for a sustainable future, leading the Global South towards justice and development!

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Latin America not only opens a new chapter in China’s relations with the continent, but also highlights China’s commitment to promoting cooperation and amplifying the voice of nations in the Global South, experts said.

Xi left Brasília last Thursday after participating in the 19th G20 Leaders Summit and paying a state visit to Brazil. Senior Brazilian officials attended his farewell at the airport.

On the way to the airport, representatives of the Chinese community, institutions and students waved Chinese and Brazilian flags on both sides of the road, celebrating the success of Xi’s visit.

During their stay, President Xi and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced the elevation of China-Brazil relations, pledging to build a “community with a shared future”, based on a fairer and more sustainable world. They also agreed to align the Belt and Road Initiative with Brazil’s development strategies.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted on Thursday that the two leaders took stock of Sino-Brazilian relations over five decades, agreeing that they are going through their best historical moment. Furthermore, they reaffirmed their strategic and long-term character, representing an example of mutual progress and cooperation between large developing countries.

According to Lin, the elevation of bilateral relations and strategic synergy will allow the two countries to consolidate past achievements, begin the next “50 golden years” and serve as a model for nations in the Global South that seek unity and greater representation in global governance.

Xi Jinping also highlighted that 2025 will mark the 10th anniversary of the China-CELAC Forum and expressed China’s willingness to work with Brazil and other Latin American countries to raise cooperation to new levels.

Chinese experts said Xi’s trip to Latin America reflects China’s commitment to promoting development and collaboration in the Global South. They highlighted that China is positioning itself as a central actor in promoting global peace, security and development.

In a speech written for the 2024 APEC CEO Summit, Xi emphasized that the principles of “planning together, building together and benefiting together” must prevail, with amplifying the voice of the Global South and ensuring equal rights, opportunities and fair rules for all countries in international economic cooperation.

At Session I of the 19th G20 Summit, Xi advocated greater integration among developing countries, highlighting the importance of building an open, inclusive and non-discriminatory global environment for economic cooperation. He highlighted the need to support digital, smart and green development to reduce the gap between the North and the South.

Yang Xiyu, senior researcher at the China Institute of International Studies, noted that the Sino-Latin American partnership represents a model of autonomous and reciprocal development, contrasting with dependence on Western powers. This collaboration inspires other countries in the Global South to pursue mutually beneficial horizontal relationships and reinforces the transition to a new multipolar order.

Furthermore, Ronnie Lins, Brazilian economist and director of the China-Brazil Research and Business Center, highlighted that strengthening economic, cultural and technological ties between China and Latin America has the potential to form a more cohesive bloc, capable of facing global challenges such as inequality, sustainability and innovation.

Chinese diplomacy also seeks to stabilize relations with major powers, such as the United States, Russia and Europe. These interactions not only affect bilateral relations, but also have direct implications for international stability, reinforcing China’s commitment to promoting global peace and development.

Under the leadership of Xi Jinping, China is promoting neighborhood diplomacy based on friendship, mutual benefit and inclusiveness, creating a peaceful and stable diplomatic environment. According to Xu Bu, president of the Institute of International Development and Security Studies at Jiangsu University, these actions are charting a path towards strengthening regional and global cooperation.

By prioritizing joint revitalization with the Global South, strengthening ties with its neighbors and stabilizing relations with great powers, China is consolidating its position as a key actor on the international stage, writing a new chapter in its diplomacy with Chinese characteristics.
