A Belt and Road Initiativeknown as the Nova Rota da Sedaa global investment project initiated by China in 2013, it involves more than 150 countries and generates amounts in excess of one trillion dollars.

This project aims to recreate the historic trade routes of the Silk Road through investments in infrastructure in developing countries.

O World Bank estimates that the project could increase the global economy by up to 2.99% and generate up to 7 trillion dollars by 2040. However, there are significant concerns regarding the indebtedness of participating countries and the resulting economic dependence on Chinese investments.

In Brazil, the debate about joining this initiative is intense. The country could benefit from improvements in infrastructure and increased trade with China, one of its main trading partners. On the other hand, the risk of increasing debt and loss of economic autonomy are factors of concern.

Proposed investments include financing critical infrastructure projects such as ports, highways and railways. These projects are financed under conditions that often require the use of Chinese labor and resources, which reinforces concerns about dependence.

In addition to the economic implications, the decision of the Brazil of joining the New Silk Road has significant geopolitical dimensions, especially considering the tensions between China and the USA. Brazilian participation in the initiative could affect relations with other global powers.

The Brazilian government is divided regarding membership. While some members see significant advantages in investment and expanded cooperation with China, others are cautious, worried about economic dependence and geopolitical consequences.

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Brazil in November, during the G20 summit, is seen as a decisive moment for discussions about Brazil’s participation in the project.

The decision to join the New Silk Road will require a careful analysis of the benefits and risks, weighing not only the economic gains but also the long-term implications for Brazil’s sovereignty and international relations.
