The death toll in the attack that hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ primary school, in the city of Minab, in the province of Hormozgan, in southern Iran, rose to 148, according to information released by Iranian state vehicles and shared by Al Jazeera. The bombing took place in the context of a joint military offensive attributed by Tehran to the United States and Israel, which began on Saturday morning.

According to the Mizan News Agency, linked to the Iranian Judiciary, the school was directly hit during the military operation. The update brought the total number of deaths to 148, in addition to dozens of injuries, after consolidation of the numbers by local authorities.

The state agency IRNA reported that rescue teams continue to work on removing rubble and treating victims. In a previous report, at least 63 people had been reported injured.

Iranian government denounces civilian deaths

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, published an image of the affected area and stated that the attack destroyed the school and killed “innocent children”. In a message published on the X network, he declared that those responsible will not go unanswered.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei called the bombing a “blatant crime” and called for immediate action from the United Nations Security Council.

In addition to the episode in Minab, the Mehr agency reported that at least two students died in another attack that hit a school east of Tehran, increasing reports of civilian casualties in the current cycle of clashes.

Questions about military targets

Reporting from Tehran, journalist Mohammed Vall, from Al Jazeera, stated that the attacks cast doubt on statements by Washington and Tel Aviv that they were only hitting military targets.

According to him, President Donald Trump had stated that the operations sought to target structures of the Iranian regime, not the civilian population. The Iranian government, in turn, maintains that the bombings constitute a violation of international law and aggression against civilians.

So far, there has been no immediate official position from the United States or Israeli governments on the accusations involving the attacks on schools.

Recent climb

The offensive comes amid a new military escalation between Iran, the United States and Israel. Previous clashes, including episodes recorded in June 2025, had already caused civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure, according to Iranian authorities.

The attack on the school in Minab increases regional tension and intensifies diplomatic pressure on the international stage, with calls for an independent investigation and cessation of hostilities.
