Since the implementation of the embargo on European Union to imports of Russian petroleum products, Ankara e Brasilia have emerged as Russia’s main importers of diesel and marine gas oil.
According to information released by market sources and the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG)the data reveals a significant increase in acquisitions by these two countries.
Before the EU embargo, which came into force in February 2023, European countries were the biggest buyers of Russian diesel. According to LSEG data cited by ReutersRussia sent approximately 1.07 million metric tons of diesel e low sulfur diesel to Turkey only in September, following the shipment of 1.04 million tons in the previous month.
In Brazil, diesel exports from Russian ports also showed marked growth. In September, exports reached 0.78 million tons, an increase compared to the 0.58 million tons recorded in August.
Furthermore, an increase in ship-to-ship transfer (STS) activities involving Russian diesel was observed in the vicinity of the Italian port of Augusta and the Greek islands, with around 370,000 tons transacted in September, compared to 230,000 tons in the previous month.
In total, Russian exports of diesel and marine gasoil grew by around 7% in September compared to August, reaching approximately 2.8 million tonnes, according to Reuters analysis based on data from LSEG and other market sources.
In a related move, Russian and Brazilian officials met two weeks ago in Brasília, at the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
The meeting, which took place on September 19, focused on discussing collaboration opportunities and investments in infrastructure, in addition to exchanging technologies for optimizing energy resources, according to information released by the ministry.
