President Lula returns to Brasília today to monitor developments

An emergency meeting of the Brazilian government began at around 10:30 this Saturday morning (3) at Itamaraty, in Brasília, to discuss the United States (USA) invasion of Venezuela in the early hours of this Saturday (3). President Nicolás Maduro was captured and removed from the country.

Present at the meeting are the Minister of Defense, José Múcio, and the substitute minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Laura da Rocha. The executive secretary of the Civil House, Miriam Belchior, also participates in the meeting, which includes other Brazilian diplomats.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva must participate via video conference, as he is in Rio de Janeiro. The press office reported that the president will return to Brasília today. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, was on vacation and also returns to Brasília today.

The United States will bomb various locations in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas, in the states of Aragua, Miranda and La Guaira.

It is not known about the whereabouts of President Nicolas Maduro who, according to US President Donald Trump, was captured by US military personnel and is now outside Venezuela.

The country’s vice president, Delcy Rodrigues, asked for proof of the lives of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

On social media, President Lula condemned the use of force against the neighboring country.

“The action recalls the worst moments of interference in the politics of Latin America and the Caribbean and threatens the preservation of the region as a zone of peace. The international community, through the United Nations, needs to respond vigorously to this episode. Brazil condemns these actions and remains available to promote the path of dialogue and cooperation”, said the president.
