Elon Musk, the top man of Tesla and until recently head of the Government Department DOGE, has been critical this weekend about the policy of the US government under Donald Trump. Although Musk describes himself as a loyal ally of the president, he increasingly distances himself from the direction that his party is heading.
Scapegen cuts
In an interview with CBS’s Sunday Morning, Musk said: “I don’t want to go against the government, but I also don’t want to be held responsible for everything they do.” In doing so, he responds to the new tax and expenditure package that is discussed in the congress. “I was disappointed by the enormous expenditure plan. It undermines the work that the Doge team does.”
Doge, full Department of Government Efficiency, was established to make the federal government more efficient and smaller. In the first months after his appointment, tens of thousands of jobs were deleted. At the end of last week, Trump praised Musk for his efforts: “Elon is fantastic,” he wrote on Truth Social. “He always stays with us, helps where he can.”
But the criticism swells. Both from the congress and public observers, the question arises as to whether Doge did not go too far with his reforms. Musk acknowledges that the criticism touches him personally. “Doge became the scapegoat.” If a cut was felt somewhere, real or imagined, it was attributed to us. “
Tesla pays the price
In the meantime, the Trump government is trying to continue the work of Doge. Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, announced on Sunday that the White House will continue with the cutbacks without support from the congress, including through executive tools.
Yet Musk seems to close his political trip with a bitter aftertaste. The image of Musk was damaged, and Tesla was also hit. Showrooms from the car brand became the target of vandalism, and the public appreciation for the company fell.
Analysts now wonder out loud whether Musk’s political ambitions have caused him more damage than influence. Can he still fully separate himself from a policy that continues to bear his name?
