Study reveals that 5 pieces of dark chocolate a week can reduce the risk of diabetes. Sweet and healthy Christmas!
It’s the season for tempting chocolate – in cups of warm chocolate, slices of Christmas cake, or even the famous brigadeirão.
Now, there’s a healthy reason to indulge in moderation – as long as you choose dark chocolate, not milk.
A long-term study from the US, published in The BMJ this month found that consuming five servings of dark chocolate a week can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
More than 500 million people worldwide live with type 2 diabetes, and with that number expected to surpass 700 million by 2045, researchers are eager to find solutions.
Chocolate contains high levels of flavonoids, natural compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which are good for the heart and reduce the risk of diabetes. Flavonoids are abundant in red wine, apples, berries, other fruits, vegetables and tea.
