Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of South Africa, Ronald Lamola, during a press conference.
In May, US President Donald Trump began to accuse without evidence that there was a genocide against the white population of South Africa, known as Afrikaners. The US government even granted refugee status to community members.
South African Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola denied the existence of any genocide in the country, a situation that even led Trump to publicly embarrass her during a White House meeting, the country’s president Cyril Ramaphosa.
“There is no threat that justifies these accusations. When we look at the attacks on farms in the last four years, there were 252 cases, of which 102 have been against farms who are mostly black and rural workers. And that has happened in the last four years. The 102 cases involve residents of farms, mainly 50 victims. BRICS in Rio de Janeiro.
“Therefore, these numbers do not support the accusations of genocide.”
According to the South African chancellor in the country, the population lives “side by side with everyone (black, white and indigenous)”, despite admitting that there are major challenges in combating crime.
“We have institutions and platforms to resolve disputes in our country, with an independent judiciary and other bodies created to deal with issues of inequality and other conflicts that may arise.”

Strengthening transactions in local currencies
Minister Ronald Lamola also commented on the importance of strengthening financial and commercial transactions among countries in local currencies, as occurred in a loan carried out in South African Rands, the country’s local currency by the New Development Bank (NBD).
“The Bank President [Dilma Rousseff] He explained that this is more economical, cheaper, and we are striving to advance in this direction so that we can make more trade between the BRICS countries in our own currencies. But this is a process that will take some time, but we are moving towards it. ”
In addition, the South African chancellor pointed out that the world currently has global actors who can counterbalance the unipolar system. “I believe China and other emerging countries play this necessary role of balance against any unilateralism or unipolarity in the world. Like South Africa, we see this BRICS platform as essential for partnerships that contribute to our development as a country.”
The chancellor was also asked about the reason for the summit’s leaders’ statement to stop, once again, the BRICS support to a South African seat on the United Nations Security Council (UN) and maintaining support for India and Brazil.
In the document, the group claims to support only one chair that represents Africa. Since the entry of Ethiopia and Egypt, the subject is no longer consensus.
“To advance and for the statements to be adopted and accepted, some commitments need to be made. And Kazan’s summit [no ano passado] It was the result of a commitment, as many discussions occurred before. And what we got in Kazan, recalling Johannesburg’s statement [em que foi anunciada a maior expansão da história do grupo]it was also the result of an intense debate. ”
