El Salvador is a rock in the surf for the crypto world. The Central American country was the first country to introduce Bitcoin (BTC) as an official means of payment. And since then, the country has been doing very well. Where El Salvador was previously known as a paradise for criminals, the number of murders dropped by 70 last year.
Despite his growing support for crypto, U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump has been vocal in his criticism of El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. During a speech on Thursday, Trump criticized the Salvadoran president for allegedly sending “drug dealers” and “people who are in jail” to the United States.
Shots fired
“In El Salvador, murders are down 70 percent—why are they down? He would have you believe it’s because he’s turned murderers into great people. No. They’re down because they’re sending their murderers to the United States,” Trump said.
After months of support for the crypto community, Trump has come out of this surprisingly with the attack on El Salvador. Many even hoped for a ‘crypto alliance’ between El Salvador and the United States if Trump would win the election.
Ironically, Trump earlier this month praised Bukele’s handling of crime and corruption. The confusion surrounding Trump’s comments has led many to suspect that he may have confused El Salvador with another Central American country, such as Venezuela. It is well known that criminals are fleeing Venezuela due to the ongoing economic crisis. All in all, Trump’s statement seems unfounded.
The Bitcoin conference
Max Keiser, a member of El Salvador’s Bitcoin Office, responded to Trump’s statement via X.
“I would be talking nonsense if my ear had just been shot off by the CIA. Trump is completely wrong. I look forward to July 27th at the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. I will share a stage with Trump and put him in his place on El Salvador.”
Next week, Donald Trump will attend the annual Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. This year, the event is expected to attract 30,000 people. Trump will give a speech on the final day. Rumor has it that Trump will announce plans for a strategic Bitcoin reserve for the United States if he is elected president.
