Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Minister reaffirms Brazil’s commitment to multilateralism in times of geopolitical tensions
The BRICS Brazil Chancellers meeting began this Monday, 28/4, in Rio de Janeiro. This is the first time the group’s foreign ministers have been in formal agenda after expansion. The event, which brings together the representations of eleven member countries, as well as partner countries, takes place at the Itamaraty Palace, a historic building of the state capital that was the home of national diplomacy for seven decades.
“This meeting is very important in many ways. It is the first plenary meeting that brings together all member countries, as well as partner countries. This already demonstrates the interest that arouses in the world. Initially, there were five countries, now, with partner countries, there are 20 countries.
BRICS brings together almost half of the world’s population and 40% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), that alone gives the importance of the group, ”said Brazilian Foreign Minister, Ambassador Mauro Vieira, on the role of this agenda to the cooperation scenario between Global South countries.
“BRICS is not against anyone, against any bloc, or against any country. BRICS is in favor of the union of countries and developments in the countries of the so -called global south.”
“We hope to deliver to the next presidency, which will be from India, palpable results of these important meetings,” the minister continued, in an exclusive interview with BRICS Brazil.
Remembering the success of the Brazilian G20 presidency in the last year, in which the national coordination made historical consensus among the main world economies, such as the commitment to the taxation of great fortunes, fighting hunger and poverty and climate action, the minister emphasized the vocation of national diplomacy to the strengthening of multilateralism.
“Brics is a very important manifestation of multilateralism, and multilateralism is a constitutional principle that governs foreign relations in Brazil. So Brazil cannot fail to strengthen multilateralism and fight to be stronger and stronger, especially at a time that we live in, when multilateralism has been attacked on all sides,” the ambassador exposed.
Vieira added that the defense of multilateralism is directly related to the maintenance of bodies such as the United Nations (UN) and the World Trade Organization (WTO), even the reservations of reform of global governance and international financial architecture.
Vieira, as a maximum diplomatic authority in Brazil and coordinator of this week’s meeting, resumed the explanation of the intentions of qualifying trade agreements in local currencies between countries, which differs from any possibility of creating a local currency.
“BRICS is not against anyone, against any bloc, or against any country. BRICS is in favor of union of countries and developments in the countries of the so -called global south. One of the platforms is trade in local currencies, […] But there is no replacement or new currency replacement project, what is there is the interest of smaller cost transactions, ”said Vieira, who showed, for example, that this model is already a reality in the scope of Aladi (Latin American Integration Association).
In previous opportunities, both BRICS’s Brazilian Sherpa, Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, and the chief advisor of the President of Brazil’s Special Advisory, Ambassador Celso Amorim, also commented on the theme, emphasizing the position of the group not as an anti-icing, but as another piece on the international reinforcement board of multilateralism.
