Measure occurs according to a progressive elevation system of retirement age every five years based on increasing life expectancy. Premier Mette Frederiksen defends model review.

The Denmark Parliament approved on Thursday (23/05) a law that increases the retirement age from 67 to 70 years by 2040.

The measure is part of a wide reform of the Social Security System approved in Denmark in 2006, which established a system of progressive elevation of retirement age every five years, based on increased life expectancy.

Thus, retirement, which is currently defined in 67 years, will increase to 68 years in 2030 and 69 in 2035. According to the new law, people born after January 1, 1970 will have to wait until the 70th anniversary to retire.

In the vote, 81 parliamentarians voted for and 21 opposed.

Premie proposes to review retirement law

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, 47, stated a few months ago that her party was in favor of renegotiating this model when the retirement age reaches 70 years.

“We don’t believe in automatically increasing retirement age. We can’t keep telling people that they need to work another year,” Frederiksen told Berlingske newspaper.
