Cyber attack affected check-in and luggage dispatch systems, causing delays and flight cancellations in Brussels, Berlin and London.
The main European airports, including Brussels, Berlin and Heathrow, in London, were affected by “cyber interruptions” that impacted check-in and luggage dispatch systems, causing delays, the company Collins Aerospace, an international airport check-in systems supplier.
“We learned of a cyber interruption in our muse software in certain airports,” the aerospace reported, after at least three moved European airports reported problems and warned of flight delays and cancellations.
“The impact is limited to electronic customer check-in and luggage dispatch and can be mitigated with manual check-in operations,” added Collins Aerospace.
At least 10 flights were canceled at Brussels airport and 17 others were delays more than an hour after the system was hit by a “cyber attack” during Friday night, the airport said.
Only check-in and manual boarding were being held Brussels airport, which advised passengers flying on Saturday to check the flight status with airlines before heading to the air terminal.
London and Berlin
Heathrow airport in London-the busiest in Europe-said its check-in and boarding systems, also supplied by Collins Aerospace, have been affected by a “technical problem” that “can cause delays for passengers who embark.”
Berlin Airport has published a warning on its site informing: “Due to a technical problem with a system provider that operates across Europe, there has been longer waiting times at check-in. We are working on a quick solution.”
Heathrow and Berlin airport authorities did not say what caused the “technical problems.”
Frankfurt airport, the largest in Germany, was not affected, a spokesman said. An employee of the Zurich Airport Operations Control Center also said the airport was not affected.
Saturday’s apparent cyber attack occurred a day after Russia’s second largest city airport, St. Petersburg, announced that his site had been hacked.
