Traditional march directed criticism at the American government, in the face of statements by President Donald Trump that the Cuban regime’s days were numbered
Thousands of Cubans participated on Tuesday night (27/01) in the traditional “Torch March” in Havana, an event that this year was marked by strong criticism of the United States government and an anti-imperialist tone.
The mobilization takes place in a context of growing tensions between Washington and Havana, especially after the recent American military operation that kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, Cuba’s main ally in the region.
On the same day as the march, US President Donald Trump stated during a trip to Iowa that “Cuba will fall very soon”.
At the forefront of the event were the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and student leaders.
“This is not an act of nostalgia, it is a call to action,” the president of the Federation of University Students, Litza Elena González Desdín, told the crowd from the top of the steps of the University of Havana.
“In times of threat, ideological firmness and defense of the homeland are necessary,” he added.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez highlighted on his social networks that thousands of citizens, especially young people, marched “in response to predictions of Trump’s ‘fall’”, reaffirming a “firm and unshakable anti-imperialist position”.
Held annually on January 27, the eve of the birthday of national hero José Martí, the march recalls the parade organized on the same date in 1953 by Fidel Castro and other young people in opposition to the government of Fulgencio Batista.
