A controversial bet on polymarket about the choice of clothing of the Ukrainian President Volodyymyr Zenskyy has led to great dissatisfaction within the crypto community. Despite photos and dozens of news items that suggest the opposite, the outcome of the bet was definitively assessed as “no”.
Betting of 237 million dollars ends in chaos
The bet on the popular predicting platform Polymarket asked whether Zensky would appear in a suit between March 22 and June 30. In total, more than 242 million dollars were traded. On June 24, Zensky appeared during a NATO meeting in the Netherlands in a black jacket, trousers and shirt. According to several international media, this was a suit.
Nevertheless, the Uma-Oracle, responsible for the official result, ruled that no credible consensus had been reached in the reporting. This definitively was determined as “no” on 1 July.
Big names speak of manipulation
The decision led to fierce responses to X and other platforms. Critics pointed to the more than 40 news articles in which Zensky’s outfit was described as a suit. It was also referred to an earlier, similar bet in May, in which a similar outfit was also assessed as no suit.
The controversial investor Martin Shkreli called the decision during a live stream a scam and announced that he will discuss this with one of the biggest investors in Polymarket.
Voting with Tokens puts Governance under pressure
The situation has again drawn attention to the voting system within decentralized markets. The result was determined via token-based voting, where owners of large quantities of tokens have more influence than regular users. According to critics, this undermines the principle of fair and transparent decision -making within Defi.
Although community proposals were submitted to re -examine the decision or to set up an independent integrity team, they were rejected on the same day – despite hundreds of voices before.
Polymarket has not yet announced no plans to revise the decision.
