US Senator Cynthia Lummis, one of Washington’s most outspoken crypto advocates, has announced that she will not run for re-election.
Her departure is a blow to the industry, which loses a rare ally in Congress.
Important face of crypto regulations disappears
Since 2021, Lummis has represented the state of Wyoming, and she was the first member of Congress to openly support the adoption of Bitcoin (BTC). Within the Senate, she founded the first committee focused entirely on crypto.
She worked on bills on market structure, tax rules and even a national bitcoin reserve. She still plays a key role in the negotiations on the important market structure law, which may still be adopted in 2026.
Energy up
In a statement, Lummis said that in recent months she has come to the realization that a new term is no longer possible. “I am a sprinter who participates in a marathon. The energy this requires does not match what I can still give,” said the senator. Her term ends in January 2027.
The seat will almost certainly remain in Republican hands, as Wyoming is one of the most conservative states. Still, her departure means the loss of an influential voice within the party when it comes to crypto adoption.
Sector responds with concern
The crypto world is reacting with concern to her departure. Ji Kim, CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation, calls Lummis “one of the biggest champions for digital assets in Washington.” According to him, her efforts would have significantly strengthened the American innovative power in the crypto field.
Lummis emphasized that she wants to use her remaining time to “get important legislation to President Trump’s desk” in 2026. She is also committed to maintaining Republican control of the Senate.
