The United States temporarily suspended the sending of weapons and intelligence support to Ukraine, as reported by John Ratcliffe, director of CIA.
The measure was adopted after a confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former President Donald Trump at the White House Oval Hall last Friday, 28.
During an interview with Fox Business journalist Maria Business on Wednesday, 5, Ratcliffe explained that the decision arose due to Trump’s expressed doubts about Zelensky’s commitment to the peace process.
“Trump had a real question about whether President Zelensky was committed to the peace process, and he said: Let’s take a break,” Ratcliffe said, according to CNN.
The interruption of operations was defined as a temporary measure, in order to give time for the United States government to reflect on the situation.
Ratcliffe also commented that the suspension of support aims to evaluate Zelensky’s posture. “I want to give a chance to think about it, and you saw the answer President Zelensky gave,” said the CIA director.
According to Ratcliffe, the US government expects the situation to be revised soon, noting that the Ukrainian President had sent a letter to Trump by reinforcing his commitment to peace negotiations.
The CIA director also indicated that the United States will continue to work with Ukraine to face aggression in the country and boost peace negotiations.
“I think we will work shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, because we have to repel the aggression that is there, put the world in a better place for these peace negotiations to advance,” said Ratcliffe.
The interruption of the sending of weapons and intelligence support generated speculation about the consequences of the relationship between the two countries, especially in the face of the scenario of tensions between Ukraine and the Russian forces. Suspension may directly impact Ukraine’s defense efforts amid the in progress conflict.
The measure, although temporary, raises questions about the United States strategy in relation to Ukraine, and President Trump’s stance may reflect a point of inflection on Kiev support policies.
Zelensky’s response and subsequent actions may determine the continuity or revision of the decision, which is still a point of attention to international and allies of Ukraine.
The situation remains under development, and more details may arise according to peace negotiations and international dynamics unfold.
