The US exhibition platform Coinbase performed worse in the second quarter of 2025 than analysts had expected. The total turnover amounted to 1.5 billion dollars. That is slightly more than the same period last year, but lower than the expectation of 1.59 billion dollars.
After this, the Coinbase share lost a solid 7 percent in value on the stock exchange.
New records for Bitcoin, but Coinbase is disappointing
Despite the fact that the Bitcoin Koers and the Prize of Ether reached new year tops in the second quarter, the trading activity on the platform decreased. The proceeds from transactions fell by 39 percent compared to the first quarter. In total, the transaction profit amounted to $ 764 million.
The adjusted profit for interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) was 512 million dollars. A year earlier that was 596 million.
According to analysts, the figures again show how sensitive coinbase remains for fluctuations in the cryptomarket.
Competition and strategy
Coinbase presented his figures a day after competitor Robinhood, which did exceed expectations. Robinhood saw the crypto trade volume rise to 28.3 billion dollars in the second quarter. The share of that company has risen by 160 percent since the beginning of this year.
In the meantime, Coinbase is trying to broaden its business model. For example, the company has recently been offering storage solutions for American spot Bitcoin funds. It is also active in offering strike services and developing your own network for applications on the blockchain. Nevertheless, these parts have been a side issue of the trading activities so far.
“Coinbase took important steps in the second quarter to bring the financial system to the blockchain,” the company said in a statement.
In the coming quarters, it must be apparent whether the broader strategy is bearing fruit and can reduce the dependence on trade income. What do you think? Is Coinbase still a good investment for the future?
