Wang Yi highlighted the ‘positive trend towards the return of cooperation’ between the two Asian giants

China-India relations are showing a positive trend towards the return of cooperation, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in a meeting with his Indian pair Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

This is Wang Yi’s first visit in three years to the neighboring country. He arrived on Monday (18) and will be until Wednesday, attending the 24th meeting of special representatives for the China-Indian border issue.

At the meeting with Jaishankar, Wang Yi made criticism of Donald Trump’s tariff policy and similar European sanctions, not to mention them explicitly. “Unilateral intimidation practices are spreading globally, while free trade and international order face challenges,” said Wang Yi.

In early August, the US government announced an extra 25% rate on India products (totaling 50%) for importing oil from Russia.

The Chinese minister said that in the 80 years of the United Nations, “humanity has come to a crossroads.”

Wang Yi also stated that the two Asian giants (with a population added to 2.8 billion, almost 35% of the world’s population), should contribute to “worldwide multipolarization and the democratization of international relations.”

One of the highlights on both sides was the resumption of Indians for the pilgrimages to sacred places in the autonomous region of Xizang (Tibet).

Earlier this year, the government announced that it would allow the return of pilgrims to the region. The trips had been interrupted for five years due to pandemic and tensions on the border between the two countries in this region.

Jaishankar thanked China for facilitating the visits of Indian pilgrims to sacred places in Xizang.

The Indian minister stated that both countries adhere to multilateralism and are committed to promoting a fair and balanced multipolar world.

It is likely that Wang Yi’s visit is also in preparation for a possible meeting between Narendra Modi and President XI Jinping, on the next trip that the Indian Prime Minister will make on the 25th Summit of the Xangai Cooperation Organization, to which the Russian representative Vladimir Putin will also go.
