With the expansion of the factory in Manaus, Chinese giant BYD promises to revolutionize the electric bus market and generate new jobs

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD announced, last Tuesday (22), the expansion of its factory located in the Industrial Center of Manaus, in Amazonas, for the production of innovative Blade generation batteries, intended for the manufacture of electric buses. The measure is part of the company’s strategy to consolidate its presence in Brazil and increase its production capacity.

In addition to battery production, BYD also revealed a new busbar production line, which will serve both the industries in the Manaus Free Trade Zone (ZFM) and the factories in São Paulo and the recently opened unit in Bahia, dedicated to the manufacture of light electric vehicles.

Since 2019, BYD has been installed in the Manaus Free Trade Zone and began production in 2020, initially focusing on the manufacture of electrical modules for buses. According to Liza Ribeiro, the factory’s financial manager, the expansion will have a positive impact on the local job market: “We will have around 75 to 90 new jobs. Our factory is fully automated, but it will create new jobs,” he said.

In March this year, company representatives visited the Superintendency of the Manaus Free Trade Zone (Suframa) to express their gratitude for the support in the process of processing and establishing the Basic Production Process (PPB) for the Battery Module for Electric Buses, approved by Brazilian Government. “The PPB we had limited us a lot, because we needed more security. We requested and today our new PPB is specified for the manufacture of ferrous asphalt electrical modules for buses entirely intended for the production of buses”, said Liza Ribeiro.

Suframa’s superintendent, Bosco Saraiva, highlighted the new investments and reinforced the importance of the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. “BYD brings to Manaus the most modern in the electrification segment in Brazil, which will directly benefit the population, mainly because it also contributes to the decarbonization of mobility in the country”, he highlighted.
