China leads the ‘electricity era’, says IEA.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) said the energy market is entering an “electricity era”, led by China, with global electricity demand growing at a rate equivalent to Japan’s annual consumption. rapidly replacing fossil fuels, raises concerns about the ability to scale up clean energy generation at a speed sufficient to meet global emissions reduction targets.
According to the annual “World Energy Outlook” report, global electricity demand could double by 2050, reaching 50,000 terawatt-hours, with China accounting for two-thirds of this growth, driven by the use of electric vehicles, increased demand for cooling and expansion of data centers.
The IEA also highlighted growing tensions in global energy security due to conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, and warned that the use of fossil fuels will peak by 2030. China is expected to overtake the US as the largest consumer of oil in the same period. .
Furthermore, China already represents 60% of the new clean energy capacity installed in 2023, with the rapid growth of solar energy, which, by 2030, could surpass the total electricity demand of the US.
