BEIJING — The total length of high-speed railways in operation in China has reached about 47,000 km, according to the National Railway Administration on Thursday.
The total railway network in operation in the country reached 162,000 km, as revealed at an administration work conference.
Fei Dongbin, head of the administration, said fixed asset investment in China’s railway sector is expected to exceed 800 billion yuan ($111.3 billion) in 2024.
A total of 3,000 km of new lines came into operation this year, including about 2,300 km of high-speed railways, Fei said.
“The high-quality development of the railway sector has supported China’s economic recovery momentum,” Fei said, citing the steady growth in the number of passengers and cargo volume transported by railways.
Chinese railways are forecast to transport 4.3 billion passengers in 2024, an increase of 11.7% compared to the previous year. The volume of railway cargo transportation is expected to grow by around 3% year on year, reaching 5.18 billion tons, according to the administration.
The robust mobility clearly reflects the positive momentum in China’s broader economic recovery, driven by a series of growth-stimulating policies.
The rise in rail passenger transport is also closely linked to the flourishing of China’s tourism sector. Government policies, including measures to stimulate consumption and expand the country’s visa-free transit policy, have aroused growing interest among domestic and international travelers.
