The commercial war between the two greatest economies in the world intensifies. China responded on Wednesday to Donald Trump with tariffs of 84% to American products from Thursday, compared to 34% previously announced, as the Ministry of Finance has said and collects the Reuters agency.
As he did last week, among the reprisal battery, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has also added 12 US entities to the export control list and six US entities to the list of “unreliable entities.”
The Chinese government had assured that it has “a firm will” and “abundant resources” to respond “with determination” if the United States insists on “further intensify its economic and commercial restrictive measures”, after Trump redoubled his tariffs to the Asian country until reaching 104%, which have entered into force on Wednesday.
“With a firm will and abundant resources, China will take countermeasures with determination and fight until the end,” said the Chinese portfolio of commerce in a statement in which he reiterates that “there are no winners in a commercial war” and that “China does not want it” but that “it will not stay your arms crossed if the legitimate rights of its people are violated.”
This same Wednesday, the Executive has published a white paper in which it defends that the Chinese position regarding its economic and commercial relations with the United States. In the book, China asserts that “both countries are an opportunity and not a threat to the other part” and asks Washington to eliminate “immediately” the “unilateral imposition of tariffs.”
It also urges the US to “strengthen dialogue, manage differences and promote cooperation”, and emphasizes that Beijing is “willing to communicate” with the US part “on key bilateral economic and commercial matters, address your concerns through dialogue and equal foot consultations.”
Trump ordered on Tuesday an additional 50% tariff to Chinese products, which raises the total taxes on Chinese goods to 104% and confirms a rapid climb in the commercial war between the two largest economies in the world. Previously, Beijing had announced a 34% tax on American products after Trump imposed that same percentage to Chinese goods.
Trump said Beijin wants an agreement on tariffs “desperately”, but considered that he does not know how to start “to negotiate and stressed that the White House awaits the call of his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.
In the possible future negotiations between Beijing and Washington is also the future of the Tiktok application in the US, which the Trump government has demanded to separate its matrix, the China Bytedance, to be able to operate in US territory.
China condemns US’s “malicious attacks” about Panama
In addition, China has accused the United States on Wednesday of launching “malicious attacks” against its cooperation with Panama and thereby exposing its “hegemonic and thug nature”, after the US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, affirmed that Beijing exercises control over key infrastructure around the Panama Canal.
“Who really seeks to control the Panama Canal? Everyone knows the answer,” said the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Jian at a press conference in Beijing.
The spokesman rejected Hegesh’s statements – who during an official visit to Panama accused China of espionage and threatening the safety and sovereignty of both countries – and said that the United States “slander and socava” cooperation between China and Panama as a pretext to justify their own control ambitions. “We urge the United States to stop spreading rumors and sow discord, and to stop deliberately linking China with the theme of the channel to cover up their true intentions,” he added.
Chinese authorities say that “they have never participated in the management or operation of the channel”, which they recognize as an infrastructure “neutral and under full Panamanian sovereignty.”
The controversy around the Chinese presence in the area of the channel has grown since the Hongkonesa CK Hutchison firm, which operates two key ports in Panama, announced an agreement with the American asset manager Blackrock to transfer the concession. Although the operation was interpreted in Washington as a strategic victory, the process has been delayed by an investigation of the Chinese antimonopoolio regulator.
Beijing denies the organized involvement of Chinese in Ukraine
On the other hand, China has denied Wednesday that there are citizens of his participating in an organized way in the Ukraine War with the Russian troops, and has reiterated his posture of neutrality and his commitment to a political solution to the conflict.
The answer comes after the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, denounced on Tuesday the arrest of two Chinese who fought in the Russian ranks, and affirmed that kyiv has indications that there could be “many more.”
“China’s position on the crisis in Ukraine is clear and coherent, and has been widely recognized by the international community,” said the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry Lin Jian when asked about the alleged capture of two Chinese citizens in the front of Donbás.
He has assured that Beijing is “verifying the information with the Ukrainian part” and stressed that the Chinese government has always demanded from its citizens “to move away from the conflict areas and refrain from participating in military operations anywhere.”
Asked about the criticisms of the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, who said that these facts “call in China’s credibility as a peace of peace”, Lin has defended that Beijing “maintains an objective and impartial position” and that it has been “committed to the promotion of high fire and dialogue.” “The world has witnessed China’s constructive efforts in the search for a political solution,” he added.
Beijing has repeatedly rejected the accusations of the West on a possible military support to Moscow, has not condemned the invasion and has maintained an ambiguous position, urging respect for “the territorial integrity of all countries”, including Ukraine, and underlining the need to address the “legitimate concerns of all countries”, referring to Russia.
The capture of the two alleged Chinese combatants represents a new diplomatic front for Beijing, in a context of growing tensions with the United States and the European Union for the commercial war, the situation of the South China Sea and the role of China in the global geopolitical scene.
