The credit given to the Russian leader for mediating between Beijing and New Delhi says a lot about Moscow’s influence in an increasingly chaotic world
The recent decision by China and India to reduce tensions on the disputed border of Ladakh, in the Himalayas, after four years of hostilities, has attracted attention on the global stage – especially through the indirect mediation of Russia, which organized the event in which the two countries sealed the agreement.
Although the outcome may surprise some, the context suggests a strategic move that reflects the broader interests of the three nations.
The announcement came on Monday last week, when New Delhi announced that both nations had agreed to withdraw troops from two hotspots in Ladakh, with new understandings on patrols in the area.
Beijing confirmed the agreement the next day, and on Wednesday the Chinese president Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met for formal talks – the first in five years – during the BRICS summit, held in the Russian city of Kazan.
The resolution of the conflict brought back memories of a similar situation in the Doklam border crisis in 2017, which was also resolved shortly before Modi met Xi at the BRICS summit in China.
This latest detente, at a Russian-led event, suggests a behind-the-scenes role for Moscow, especially significant for the Russian president, Vladimir Putinwhich seeks to strengthen alliances and its diplomatic role at a time of great international attention.
The agreement between China and India can be interpreted as a pragmatic step by the two countries in search of regional stability, as well as a reflection of Russia’s diplomatic influence in promoting dialogues between the two Asian powers.
For Putin, the outcome reinforces his role as a global mediator and contributes to strengthening his position in strategic partnerships in the BRICS.
With the presidential elections in the United States approaching, the event gains an additional layer of complexity, underlining the power of multilateral relations and the importance of cooperation between countries in strategically sensitive regions.
The détente between China and India, even if temporary, opens space for more stability in Asia and strengthens the alliances built on platforms such as Brics, in which Moscow remains a crucial link.
