The Chinese government announced this Tuesday (10) that it will provide support to Cuba in the face of the energy crisis caused by the shortage of fuel, including aviation kerosene, which has affected the operation of the airline sector and tourist activity on the island.

According to an official statement released by Beijing, the Asian country reaffirmed its opposition to “any form of external interference” and expressed support for Cuban sovereignty. Chinese authorities attributed the difficulties faced by Havana to sanctions and restrictions imposed by other countries.

The crisis intensified after the United States suspended the shipment of Venezuelan oil to Cuba, a measure that reduced the island’s energy supply. Furthermore, American President Donald Trump declared that he may apply sanctions to countries that supply fuel to the Cuban government, increasing pressure on the Caribbean country.

The lack of kerosene has led airlines to cancel flights in recent weeks. The reduction in air operations directly impacts tourism, Cuba’s main source of external revenue and a strategic sector for the local economy.

With the decrease in the flow of foreign visitors, the fuel shortage will have broader economic effects, worsening a scenario already marked by fiscal difficulties and import limitations.

Beijing did not detail the volume or form of the announced aid, but indicated that the cooperation seeks to mitigate the immediate effects of the crisis and contribute to the stability of energy supplies in sectors considered essential.
