Although 2025 gave hope for clear rules for crypto in the US, there is now fierce criticism. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson expresses his concerns about President Donald Trump’s policies and calls the political course “dangerous” for the sector.

‘Trump makes crypto part of his brand’

In an interview with CoinDesk TV Hoskinson lashes out unusually hard. According to him, Trump has “politicized, commercialized and destroyed” crypto. The reason? This includes the launch of the TRUMP memecoin and Melania Trump’s own token in early 2025.

Hoskinson states that these tokens were purely intended to raise money quickly. The TRUMP token shot to a market capitalization of $14.5 billion upon launch, but has since lost more than 92 percent of its value.

“The US government participated in something that previously only happened on obscure websites,” says Hoskinson. “Investors have lost money. Confidence has been damaged.”

Chance for clear crypto legislation wasted

According to Hoskinson, the image of the entire crypto sector has suffered under the Trump administration. And that comes at a painful time. At the beginning of 2025, there was momentum for the CLARITY Act: a bill that should finally provide clarity about which tokens fall under the SEC and which fall under the CFTC.

The law was already passed in the House of Representatives in July. The Senate will vote this week. Yet Hoskinson fears that politics has now become too divided to reach consensus.

“If those tokens had not come about, we might have had a legislative framework,” he says. “But now Americans mainly think of Trump when they think about crypto. And that is not a good sign.”

‘Chaotic policy and a failing CEO’

Hoskinson also criticizes the lack of consistency within the White House. For example, he was invited for consultation, only to be sidelined without explanation. When Cardano (ADA) was suddenly designated as an official crypto reserve, he only heard about it through the media.

He speaks of “predatory market forces” and calls the appointment of David Sacks as crypto boss a failure. “If there is no legislation this year, Sacks must resign. He has failed.”

The founder of Cardano concludes with a warning: if this course continues, he fears that developers like himself will be “politically persecuted”.
