Catherine Connolly, a left-wing independent candidate, won the presidential elections in Ireland with a significant victory of 63.36% of the valid votes, defeating Heather Humphreys, from the center-right Fine Gael party, who obtained 29.46% of the votes. Connolly, 68, has been MP for Galway West since 2016 and will be the 10th president of Ireland, as well as being the third woman to hold the position. She will assume the role following the conclusion of Michael D. Higgins’ second term.

During his campaign, Connolly highlighted themes such as defending Ireland’s military neutrality, promoting diversity and fighting for social justice. She has also openly criticized the increasing militarization of the European Union and expressed support for the Palestinian people, stating that the war in Gaza is a genocide. Furthermore, he promised to visit Palestine during his term. His victory represents a significant change in Irish politics, with a strengthening of the left in the country’s political scene.

The election saw the participation of three candidates: Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin of Fianna FƔil, who withdrew his candidacy before the election. Vote counting took place on Saturday 25 October, with early results indicating a substantial lead for Connolly. Humphreys conceded defeat before the vote count ended and congratulated Connolly on his victory.

Connolly takes office with the support of a coalition of left-wing parties, including Sinn FƩin, the Labor Party, Social Democrats, People Before Profit, the Green Party, 100% Redress and several independent members of the Oireachtas. She promises to be an inclusive president and work to represent all Irish citizens.

Ireland’s presidency has a mainly ceremonial role, but Connolly intends to use his position to influence public debate and promote progressive policies in the country. His victory is seen as a reflection of the desire for change and a policy more focused on human rights and social justice.
