Japanese manga and anime series Captain Tsubasa has launched its non-fungible token (NFT) football game on the Oasys blockchain, a platform focused on Web3 gaming.
Game first revealed in 2022
On May 20, Oasys announced that Captain Tsubasa, a popular 1980s manga and anime written and illustrated by Japanese author Yōichi Takahashi, is releasing a version of the NFT football game on their Web3 gaming blockchain.
The Web3 game, developed by Mint Town and Blocksmith platforms, was first unveiled in 2022 and officially launched on January 12, 2023. The project introduced its governance token on June 4, 2023.
NFTs of animated series characters can be collected
The game allows players to collect NFTs of characters from the original animated series. Gamers can develop these characters, form teams and play in different game modes. Rival mode allows players to relive the original storyline, while player-versus-player (PvP) mode lets gamers compete against other online players. In addition, the game has an Arena mode in which gamers can play 11 against 11 football matches.
Hiroshi Kunimitsu, CEO of Mint Town, stated that the integration into the Oasys blockchain gives fans “a new way” to experience the animated story. He added that the release demonstrates the potential of blockchain technology in “enhancing interactive entertainment and gaming.”
Captain Tsubasa has been published since 1981
Captain Tsubasa was first published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1981 and was adapted into an anime series in 1983. The series was followed by many film and television adaptations, the last of which aired in 2018. By 2023, the series had sold 90 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever.
To coincide with the game’s launch on Oasys, the Genesis NFTs will include additional features such as increasing players’ energy points.
Meanwhile, GameFi studios are starting to get active again as crypto prices recover. On May 15, Web3 gaming studio Immutable released the game Guild of Guardians on Google Play and the Apple App Store. On May 13, Web3 game Pixels surpassed 1 million daily active players and generated $4.4 million in token revenue. After migrating to the Ronin blockchain on February 22, the game reached a valuation of $2.7 billion.
